I believe there is a difference between fitness yoga and a spiritual yoga. I would not feel comfortable practicing yoga in a studio with a yogi, but I believe that all truth is God’s truth and that there are physical benefits to the yoga poses. I am a deeply committed Christian and I do enjoy yoga classes at the gym. I do refrain from the namaste statement at the close, and should an instructor want to do a guided mediation, I tune out the instructor, and instead, focus my thoughts on God, and mediate on Him. There is a way of participating in yoga that would be extremely antithetical to the teachings of Christ in that it would be participating in the Hindu and/or New Age religions, but again, at the gym, strictly focusing on poses, and reflecting on Christ, rather than emptying my mind, I do not see how I am violating any of the teachings of Scripture.
