The Meaning of Life

The meaning of life can have thousands of different answers, depending on who you ask and what their religious or non-religious beliefs are and their source of beliefs.  For me, I get the meaning of life from being a follower of Jesus Christ.  The source of my convictions is from Protestant Christian Scripture.  It is this Scripture that I believe is the Word of God, as He reveals Himself to the world, without error in all that it asserts.

There are many different worldviews.  According to Albert Wolters a worldview is defined as “the comprehensive framework of one’s basic beliefs about things.”  My worldview is based on the framework of Christian Scripture.  It is from this worldview that I understand the true meaning of life.  Again, here, there can be many meanings of life, depending on who you ask.  However, I believe there can only be one true meaning of life, the same as there is only one way to God, which is through Jesus Christ, Son of God, the promised Jewish Messiah, the Savior of the World.

I believe the meaning of life is found only in complete surrender to the one true living God; the God of creation, the God of the universe, the God of my salvation.  If life is to have real meaning, it must include the surrender of self to Almighty God.  Everything about me must be surrendered to Him.  I must surrender my life, my passions, my desires, my plans, my will, my pride, all to Him.

Once we surrender, we are then free to live a life devoted to God and His will.  Of course, this can only be done if we have received God’s gracious gift of the forgiveness of our sin, that Jesus is God and that He laid His life down to satisfy God’s wrath toward sin and rose from death in order that we may enter into everlasting relationship with Him.  It is by this humbling surrender to God that we find true freedom for our lives here on earth, as well as for our very souls.

The true meaning of life is found in a right relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ.  It is here we find hope, joy, purpose, and contentment.  It is here we understand how to love God with all our mind, soul and strength.  We also learn how to truly love our neighbor.  Loving God and loving others is the summary of God’s laws.  We find life and freedom.  We find purpose in why we’re here on earth and what we are to do.  We even have purpose beyond death and we don’t have to be afraid.

Telling others what God has done for me is also part of the meaning of life.  Because God desires that none should perish, but that all people everywhere should repent and turn toward Him in humility and surrender.  We must share the good news of Christ with others and really take this seriously, as some are in the habit of taking this responsibility too casual, but we must be responsible and do our part to help bring God’s message to the world.

The meaning of life also has to do with living a blameless life before God and man.  Others will see our good deeds and glorify God and when they ask about the hope that is within us, we should be prepared to give an answer.  We should live to please God as His followers, His children, His adopted sons and daughters.  We need to praise God for His mighty works.  We need to thank God for all He has done and for His provision in our lives.  We need to worship Him with our lives, and show others how they may worship Him too.
