Confession – Doctrine of God

God as Infinite Being

I believe in the one, true, living God. (Is 45:5; Mal 2:10; Rom 3:29-30; 1 Cor 8:5-6; Eph 4:4-6; 1 Tim 2:5)

I believe God is triune in His eternal existence; that He is complete and all-sufficient within Himself, entirely independent from any created being; that He consists of one nature and three persons:  Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each being co-equal and co-eternal, fulfilling their purpose completely, indwelling one another; that there is neither superiority nor inferiority in their being; that the Father is unbegotten; that the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and Son; that He is a community of sacrificial, self-giving love. (Gen 1:1- 2, 26; Matt 3:16-17; Mk 1:10-11; Lk 3:21-22; Jn 1:1-3, 33-34, 15:26; 2 Cor 13:14)

I believe God is eternal; that He has always been and always will be, without beginning or end, uncreated and infinite; that even though He is outside of time, He works in time for both His glory and our benefit. (Gen 21:33; Is 26:4; Jer 10:10; Ps 90:2, 102:11-12; Rev 1:8)

I believe God is both transcendent and immanent; that the transcendence of God is that which is presently unknown to us – the mysteries of God which He has chosen not to reveal; that the immanence of God is that which describes His closeness and interaction with His people – the personable and intimate loving God that we can know. (Deut 4:7; 1 Ks 8:57; Is 55:8-9; Jer 23:23-24; Rom 11:33)

I believe God is sovereign; that He is supreme in authority over all of creation; that creation and humanity exists and continues at His will and that our lives are in His hands. (Deut 3:24; 2 Sam 7:22, 28; Ps 71:16)

I believe God is good; that He is most abundant in love, grace, mercy, longsuffering, faithfulness, compassion, and justice. (Ps 34:8, 100:5, 103:8; 145:9; Lam 3:25; Nah 1:7; 2 Col 1:11; Pet 3:9)

I believe God is simple; that He is invisible, having no body or parts; that He is Spirit, infinite in time and space. (Deut 6:4; Mk 12:29; Jn 4:24; Gal 3:20)

I believe God is unchanging; that He does not change in being, perfections, knowledge, or nature; that His plans remain firm and He keeps His promises; that He changes, however, as He interacts with and responds to us in time and history. (Nm 23:19; 1 Sam 15:29; Ps 33:11, 102:27; Mal 3:6; Heb 13:8; Js 1:17)

I believe God is all-powerful; that He can do anything that does not go against His nature or His laws; that He creates, sustains, rules, provides, reveals, redeems, judges and recreates. (Ex 15:1-6, 11; Ps 18:1-3, 46-50; Rom 1:20, Eph 1:18-22)

I believe God is all-knowing and all-wise; that He exhaustively knows the past, present and future; that He applies His knowledge in the events of history to bring about His revelation of Himself and humanity’s redemption, all to His glory and our benefit. (Pr 3:19; Rom 16:27; 1 Cor 2:7; Eph 1:8, 3:10)

I believe God is all-present; that He is physically everywhere in being, and morally everywhere in convicting humanity of sin and bringing them to salvation. (Ps 14:5, 46:1, 139:7-12; Jer 23:23-24; Acts 7:48-49)

I believe God suffers; that He is moved by our obedience and disobedience in an unknown mysterious way; He does not suffer with passions that lead to sin; He voluntarily participates in the pain and suffering of His creation; His emotions and passions do not limit or control Him; He suffers from a position of strength and much of His suffering is redemptive. (Gen 6:6; Is 63:9-10; Jer 31:20; Mk 15:33-34; Jn 11:32-35; 1 Cor 1:21; Eph 4:30)

God as Creator

I believe God is the source of all created things, the giver of all life; that He created the Heavens and the angels; that He created our universe, the earth, humans, animals and plants; that He had purpose in His Creation, to allow created beings to fellowship with Him and enjoy His presence in complete adoration, trust and obedience; that He created all things good and perfect, in alignment with His will. (Gen 1:1-2; Deut 32:6; Is 40:28; Acts 4:24; Col 1:15-17; 1 Pet 4:19; Rev 4:11)

God During The Fall

I believe God gave Adam and Eve freedom of choice to obey or disobey Him; that He allowed their disobedience in eating from the forbidden tree; that because of this first sin, God cursed the ground, but lovingly provided a covering for Adam and Eve’s sin by the slaying of the first animal; that since God cannot have sin in His presence, He banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

I believe God allows evil and sin to reign on earth for a season until the last days where He will reclaim and renew all things to Himself; that Satan is now seated on God’s “under throne”, which Adam and Eve willingly gave up as they pursued disobedience; that this season of evil is a mystery that we cannot fully explain, but yet God allows and had the foreknowledge of before Creation. (Gen 2:16-18, 3:1, 17-24)

God as Redeemer

I believe God the Father planned salvation, that the Son provided salvation and that the Holy Spirit applies salvation. (Ps 68:20; 1 Cor 15:45; Eph 1:9; Lk 3:6; Acts 28:27-29)

I believe God chooses whom He will save in cooperation with the freedom He has given to us to either choose Him or reject Him; that the entire plan of salvation was administered by Him; that he appointed and sent the Son and Holy Spirit; that He accepts, justifies, forgives and adopts us as His children upon our repentance toward and request of forgiveness from Him; that He hears and answers our prayers, and receives our worship of Him with gladness. (Ez 18:27; Mic 7:18; Rom 5:5-8; Jn 1:5-7; Eph 1:5-7; 1)

I believe God has been working throughout history to redeem humankind to Himself, culminating with the Son, Jesus Christ, the promised Jewish Messiah; that through Christ’s perfect humanity, His substitutionary death on the Cross, burial and resurrection, man’s sin is atoned for and all who receive Christ and His forgiveness are promised everlasting life in fellowship with God; that this redemption in Christ is to repair humanity’s broken relationship with God since Adam and Eve’s first sin; that those who are redeemed are born again, given new natures, and are now indwelt by the Holy Spirit for new life in the Kingdom of God; that they are adopted as His children into His family. (Job 23:38; Ps 1, 31:5; Lk 1:68; 2 Cor 5:21; Gal 3:13; 2 Pet 3:9)

I believe God will judge evil in the last days; that He will make all things new and right; that the new heavens and the new earth will be a place of everlasting fellowship for the righteous with God; where humanity and creation will live in peace, harmony and tranquility; that His reign will last forever; that He has reserved Hell as a place of everlasting punishment for the wicked and disobedient, a place absent of God’s presence. (Job 19:25; Ps 34:22; Eccl 8:13; Is 40:10; Rom 8:28; 2 Th 1:9; Tit 2:13-15)

Our Response to God

I believe God is to be adored, worshipped, respected, feared, revered and loved; that we are to be obedient to His commands in Holy Scripture; that we are to seek Christ-likeness in our humanity as we strive for holiness and righteousness; that we are to commit, as best we can and know how, our very lives to Him in response to His love and redemption of our human lives and souls, even to death if necessary. (Deut 10:12-13; 1 Chr 16:25; Ps 145:3; Eccl 12:13; 1 Tim 1:17; Rev 4:11)

I believe God should be seen as glorious and beautiful, blessed and majestic, holy and wonderful, loving and kind, just and merciful; that He is to be recognized for whom He is – our Mighty God! (Ps 29:2, 96:5-7, 100, 111:2-4; Mic 7:18-20; Heb 1:3; 2 Pet 1:17; Jude 25)

I believe God is our refuge and that we should praise Him in times of trouble, relying on Him even when He seems distant or absent. (Ps 3, 9:9, 18:2, 46:1, 62:8, 88)
